If you find yourself wandering through the picturesque streets of Semboku, Akita, make sure to stop by Ucho-ten Kissa, an enchanting café that promises not just a meal but an experience that warms the heart and delights the senses. Tucked away near the historical Kakunodate samurai residences, this hidden gem is more than just a spot for coffee; it’s a sanctuary for weary travelers and locals alike.

The moment you step inside Ucho-ten Kissa, you are greeted with an inviting atmosphere that radiates calm and relaxation. The carefully curated aesthetic enhances your visit; with light pouring in through large windows and artfully placed decor, this café is a visual delight as much as it is a culinary one. Patrons rave about the peaceful ambience, noting that it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. As Glenn Farley aptly put it, the space permeates a “peaceful, calm kind energy” that just makes you want to linger.

Ucho-ten Kissa is well-known for its exceptional coffee and homemade treats. Customers frequently sing praises of the delicious caramel pudding, which Chathuranga Balasooriya describes as irresistible — so much so that it's impossible to stop at just one! If you venture to try their pasta, you might find yourself charmed by the staff's willingness to accommodate your requests, as seen in the delightful experience shared by Chathuranga. You can expect a warm exchange with the owner and staff, who are eager to make your visit memorable.

The café offers a delightful selection of small bites alongside their exceptional beverages, creating a true culinary experience. Whether you fancy a comforting cup of tea or prefer the rich taste of their expertly brewed coffee, each sip promises to elevate your experience. As Phil Mahoney shared, the café may be a bit hidden, but once you step inside, the delightful vibe makes it well worth the search.

Ucho-ten Kissa isn’t just about the food and drinks; it’s about the community feel, something Robert Vilkelis highlighted in his review. You’ll find regular patrons who share laughs and stories with the friendly staff, a testament to the warm atmosphere that envelops you the moment you walk in. After a long day of walking and exploring, there’s perhaps no better way to rejuvenate than by taking a break here, enjoying delectable bites and a warm connection with the café’s welcoming spirit.

In a world that often prioritizes hustle and bustle, Ucho-ten Kissa serves as a gentle reminder of the beauty in simplicity and hospitality. With every visit, you not only treat your palate but also nourish your soul. Plan your visit and find out why this café is celebrated as a highlight of any trip to Semboku – you may just find your favorite spot in Japan!

The café was delicious and the owner/staff were so kind and welcoming, this was a great place to rest my tired legs. I’m truly grateful for their hospitality and they are the perfect example of why coffee culture in Japan is one of the best in the world. I’m so grateful that I found this place!

This place is such a vibe. Only went have coffee and try the caramel pudding, ended up having lunch there spending hours. Food was delicious. Since I couldn’t eat the whole pasta I asked her if she could do half with the help of translate app, she smiled and said of course. I also ended up eating 2 puddings. Only few locals,owner/chef and me in the cafe. They were so nice to me, I felt so welcomed. This is what I came to experience in Japan and was the best memory of my 22 day trip in Japan. I’m definitely going back when I visit Japan next year. Thank you so much!

Delightful. Friendly. Great tea and coffee. Small bites also available. A bit hidden along a corridor - just go in!

Wonderful little cafe not far from the Kakunodate samurai residences, and open until later in the evening. Delicious coffee and small bites to enjoy. It's a great way to relax after a day of walking through the town, especially if you booked a shinkansen departure for later than you ought to! It's delightful to see regular patrons enjoying themselves and chatting with the staff. Makes you feel like it's a really special local place.

A really small and cozy spot for an afternoon coffee/tea and dessert. All the food is prepared on the spot and is delicious.

This place is located at the end of a hallway whose entrance is right in front of the street. The coffee is hand poured right in front of you and it's truly delicious. I got the cheesecake (New York style) and it was very good. Unfortunately, the menu is only in Japanese and Google Translate-san has a hard time with it (handwritten). The other deserts offered there looked really good, but unfortunately I have no idea what they are called. The owner is very kind, and tries hard to understand you even though there is a language gap. The location itself is small (probably 10 people max will fit in the cafe) but the quaint atmosphere makes up for it. It seems like a favorite with the locals and can fill up fast. I cannot recommend this place enough, just make sure you are respectful and quiet, as the location is rather small.
